Come September, the scenic locales of Ladakh will be wrapped in the colours of the much-awaited Naropa festival of the Drukpa Order: Occurring once every 12 years, this "Kumbh Mela of the Himalayas" promises to be a cultural and spiritual extravaganza, featuring stars and performers like KK, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Vishal-Shekhar, Terence Lewis, Sivamani, Shreya Ghosal, Shakti and Neeti Mohan, among others are expected to perform. They will join lakhs of tourists and devotees to pay tribute to Saint Naropa, the patron saint of the Drukpa Order.
To be held from September 16-22, the festival is open to public. It will feature an elaborate ceremony where Gyalwang Drukpa, spiritual head of the Drukpa Order who is revered as Naropa's reincarnation, shall don the Six Bone Ornaments that are the physical legacy of Saint Naropa - left behind after his liberation. The Drukpa Order, which is known for its insistence on gender equality and celebration of diversity, regularly organises events to highlight issues of global significance. The Cycle Yatra, which commenced in Kathmandu (Nepal) on July 3 from one of the monasteries of the Drukpa lineage, has become an annual feature of their efforts to promote awareness about the environmental crises in the region and inspire collaborative action to resolve it.
